Our Return to Rome

Once again, we traveled to Rome. We spent one last evening (Day Six) here revisiting the sites from our bus (but this time at night with all the beautiful monuments displayed by yellow lights) and having one last four-course dinner in Italy.

Of course, we had to stop at the famous Trevi Fountain to throw in a coin and make our wish. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into this fountain, your wish will most definitely come true. However, you can only make one wish -- To Return to Rome someday. The precise tradition calls for you to throw the coin over your left shoulder while standing with your back to the Trevi Fountain.

They say that tens of thousands of people visit the fountain every day to throw a coin into the water. Needless to say, the fountain has to be cleaned out several times a week. Most of the money from the fountain is distributed to three children's charities.

Trevi Fountain:

The Trevi Fountain is among the many magnicent Baroque buildings in Rome. The central niche depicts Neptune, the sea god, riding a winged chariot driven by sea horses through the gushing waters from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct. The chariot is drawn by winged steels and is led by a pair of tritons, the figures in the side represent good health and fertility. Corinthian columns flank a triumphant arch with a large niche representing the palace of Neptune.

Pietro da Cortona and Bernini designed the fountain, but with the death of Pope Urban VIII, it was left unfinished for one hundred years. Finally, Pope Clement XII entrusted the work to Nicola Salvi, who finished the undertaking between 1732 and 1751.
